Phillip Phillips Interview with Mix105.1 fm

Scott McKenzie & The Morning MIX chatted with American Idol winner Phillip Phillips earlier today and covered all things Phillipp!  What’s he been up to after winning?  How’s he feeling?  What was the hardest part about being on the show?

Phillip Phillips told us that he wasn’t anAmerican Idol fan from the start and described it as “a really poppy show” for him to watch. While receiving criticism from the judges, he wished that they could have been a little harsher on him, but always enjoyed hearing Randy Jackson’s critique.  He would tell Phillip to “keep on doing your thing” and “not worry about what Hollywood has to give.”

Phillip Phillips surprised himself while on the journey to becoming the next American Idol. He told The Morning MIX that he remembers during Hollywood Week, he looked up previous winners and how many songs they had to perform in order to reach the finale and thought, “Man! That’s a lot of songs. I don’t think I can do that.”

Memorizing songs and putting his own spin on some of them in just a week’s time also shocked him on what he was capable of doing. Phillip described being on the show as “A lot of long nights, you know, nonstop.”

Some of his favorite performances included “Movin’ Out,” “The Letter,” “Superstition,” and “Volcano.”

One of his biggest challenges was actually choosing a song. He said that some of his song choices wouldn’t clear or they would only give the 7 contestants a list with only 10 songs that they could choose from and fighting for your song was difficult.

His new single is called “Home” and has soared up to the top of charts!  And don’t forget you can see him on the American Idol Tourright here in Orlando at the Amway Center on August 2nd.

‘I Hate Being the Center of Attention’

After a record-breaking 132 million votes,Phillip Phillips is the season 11 American Idol champion.

The 21-year-old pawnshop worker from Leesburg, Ga., talked to reporters about his big win, runner-up Jessica Sanchez, postponing his kidney surgery, and more.

On becoming the new American Idol.

“I’m still adjusting. It’s pretty crazy. I’m not used to all this because I hate being the center of attention. I’m still trying to take all of it in piece-by-piece, but it’s definitely different.”

On the moment his Idol win was announced.

“I didn’t even really want to sing or anything. I was just so shocked and I just started thinking about the top 12 and our whole journey. It’s just so crazy now that it’s over. It was a tough road for all of us, and it was just amazing to get to know them. It just kind of got me a little emotional.”

Do You Think Phillip Phillips Deserved to Win American Idol? Vote!

On runner-up Jessica Sanchez.

“She was just so proud of me. She said she knew it, but I honestly didn’t know. I thought she was going to win. She has such an amazing voice. We’re just so proud of each other no matter the outcome.”

On his coronation song, “Home.”

“[The producers] felt like it was the right fit for me. I wanted to do one of my own songs that I’ve written, but in the short amount of time we were given, we couldn’t really do it. It’s a good song, but it’s not really something I would write. I’m glad people liked it. It’s a little too pop for me. I’m a little more rock than that, so hopefully people will enjoy what I have to put out.”

On his season-long battle with kidney issues.

“My right kidney kind of isn’t functioning, and I have a stent in to help with that. I just have to get that fixed up pretty soon. I should be 100 percent by the tour. It was rough at times, and I came close to dropping out to get the surgery done, but I had a lot of great doctors and a lot of great people who helped me out through this, so I’m blessed.”

On the support of his longtime girlfriend, Hannah Blackwell.

“She’s so excited for me. She’s helped me out a lot through this. I’m hoping she’ll be able to come on tour with me. It would be cool to have her there. She supported me throughout all this, and I love her to death.”

On how the couple deals with his bevy of female fans.

“If a girl votes for me because I’m cute and then gets mad if I have a girlfriend, then she didn’t really like the music. I’m all about the music. I’m not trying to be some cute guy who’s trying to be successful off of that. I really want the music to come first. I want people to try to feel it and have fun with it like I do.”

On his unique vocal style.

I’m not that great of a singer. I don’t feel I’m that great. I’m not outstanding. I can’t hit all these high notes and everything. I don’t know if it’s good or not, but I try to do something with my voice.”

On his debut album’s sound.

“Kind of like jazz and rock and acoustic stuff. I’m really excited to get it out there. It’s going to be cool.”

On rumors that Jennifer Lopez won’t be returning as a judge next season.

“That would be horrible. She’s done this for years and she knows her stuff. She cares about each one of us. She’s a great woman and hopefully she stays.”

On leaving his native Georgia to pursue his career.

“I’m most likely going to be moving. I’ve got to go after a lot of things and have to be in the right places [to do that], so I will probably be moving.”

On the upcoming summer “American Idol LIVE!” tour.

“I’m ready just to jam out. It’s going to be fun and hopefully the crowd’s feeling it, too.”

Phillip On His Health, Girlfriend, Music & The Lesson He Learned Winning Idol

Phillip Philips won “American Idol’s” Season 11, but he admitted to Access Hollywood on Thursday that there were times during the competition that he thought of leaving the show.

“Yeah, there was a time or two,” he told AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman of his thoughts about quitting due to his kidney situation. “But, I had great doctors and loving family and friends and just people who also help out with the show, just help you out, so it was good to have those people around to keep you in and keep you going.”

The 21-year-old revealed he’s been having trouble with kidney stones for about a year, and a stent was put in around the time the live performances started on Season 11 of “Idol.”
“I have to get all that fixed and what not,” Phillip told Laura, who was exclusive with the star as he travelled to Access Hollywood on Thursday.

The young man admitted he was in a little bit of pain from kidney stones during the two-night finale on FOX, but the night of his win, “was actually, a really good day,” he said.

Phillip had additional help from his girlfriend, who is involved in the medical field.
“She’s actually going to school for nursing, so that’s exactly the perfect job for her,” he smiled.
It was “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest who first revealed on national television that Phillip has a lady in his life, but the singer told Laura that his girlfriend isn’t worried about the female fans smitten with her beau.
“She knows I’m not really about all that stuff,” Phillip said. “If girls like me ’cause I’m cute, and they find out I have a girlfriend or something and they don’t like me then, it wasn’t about the music. So I’d rather be all about the music. I’d rather not be successful being that way, than being cute and being successful.”

The “American Idol” was surrounded by his family after his win on Wednesday’s broadcast, and although his parents went to great lengths to fly out to Los Angeles and support him, they aren’t expecting a financial windfall following his win. Instead, Phillip said his parents want to make sure their son sets himself up.
“I’m gonna help my family out when I can, but they also want me to take care of myself first and get my own life together, and get my feet on the ground. [I’ll] help them out whenever they need it, but they also told me they want me to take care of my business first,” he said.

Phillip said he is truly thankful for all the support from his hometown and fans across the globe, and he felt his “Idol” journey came with a lesson worth sharing.
“Watching all these people say, ‘It’s unreal,’ and everything, and ‘Never give up on your dream,’ — it’s true,” he said.

“You can’t give up, no matter what it is. Whether it’s singing, whether it’s soccer… [or] anything else, you just gotta chase after it.”
